Business advisory

Advice from people who have signed the cheques themselves

We work with founders and SME owners on the decisions that set the direction for the next few years: strategy, growth, raising money and securing grants. Our advisors run companies inside our group, so the advice comes with the scars.

What we help with

Four areas, usually tackled together

A growth plan depends on the strategy. A funding round depends on the growth plan. We can pick up any one of these, but they tend to work best as a sequence.

Business strategy

For companies that have outgrown the plan they started with. We look at where the money actually comes from, which customers are worth keeping, and what to stop doing.

  • Business model and unit economics review
  • Market, pricing and competitor analysis
  • Priorities for the next 12 to 24 months
  • Leadership workshop to agree the plan

Growth planning

Turning a growth target into a plan people can run: which channels, which hires, what it costs and what has to be true for it to work.

  • Revenue model and growth assumptions
  • Sales and marketing plan, with HURUF where needed
  • Hiring and organisation design
  • Quarterly targets and a simple dashboard

Fundraising readiness

Getting ready before you speak to investors, so the first meeting isn't spent explaining gaps. We also tell you plainly if raising now is the wrong move.

  • Equity, debt and grant options compared
  • Pitch deck and investment narrative
  • Financial model and use of funds
  • Data room and due diligence checklist

Grant & funding navigation

Malaysia has many grants and funding schemes, each with its own rules and timing. We help you find the ones you actually qualify for and put together applications that hold up to review.

  • Mapping relevant government and agency schemes
  • Eligibility check before you spend time applying
  • Proposal writing and budget preparation
  • Reporting and compliance after the award

How an engagement runs

Short cycles, written outputs, no long reports nobody reads

  1. Diagnostic

One to two weeks. We review your numbers, talk to your team and a few customers, and write down what we think is going on.

  2. Plan

A working session with the founders to agree priorities, owners and targets. You leave with a plan on a few pages.

  3. Build

We work alongside your team on the pieces that need hands: the model, the deck, the grant application, the sales process.

  4. Review

Monthly or quarterly check-ins against the targets. We adjust the plan when the facts change.

Ways to work with us

Pick the format that fits the problem

Strategy sprint

Four to six weeks, fixed scope and fee. Ends with an agreed plan and the first pieces built. Suits a specific decision or a funding round.

Retained advisor

A monthly retainer for founders who want a senior sounding board, with regular sessions and on-call support between them.

Board-style review

A quarterly session where we review performance with you the way a good non-executive director would.

Advisory + training

Most strategies depend on people doing something they haven't done before. Because we're also an HRD Corp registered training provider, we can deliver that part as claimable training for your managers and staff.

And if the plan needs a campaign, a system, a new brand or a new office, the companies in our group can build it. You don't have to brief a new supplier from scratch.

Who we usually work with

  • Founders preparing for a first institutional raise
  • Family businesses handing over to the next generation
  • SMEs that grew quickly and now need structure
  • Companies applying for government grants or matching funds
  • Service businesses moving into a new market or product

FAQ

Advisory questions

Who is your advisory work for?

Founders and owner-managers of SMEs, usually with between five and two hundred staff, who are at a turning point: scaling, raising money, entering a new market or fixing a business that has stalled.

How is an advisory engagement priced?

Most engagements are a fixed fee for a defined piece of work, such as a four-week strategy sprint. Ongoing advisory is a monthly retainer. We agree scope and fee in writing before starting.

Can advisory be claimed under HRD Corp?

Advisory work itself is not training, so it is generally not claimable. Where the work reveals a skills gap, such as managers who need to read financials or a sales team that needs a new process, we can deliver that part as a claimable training programme.

Do you take equity or success fees for fundraising?

Our standard engagements are fee-based. We don't act as a broker or licensed corporate finance adviser, and we'll refer you to one where a transaction needs it.
